Clinical and Epidemiological Study on Rheumatic Fever in Children




Abstract
We observed 139 cases of rheumatic fever admitted to the Department of Pediatrics, four branch hospitals of Catholic Medical Center, from Jan. 1969 to Dec. 1978. The results obtained were as follows
1. It was found that there is a trend to decreasing incidence of rheumatic fever in the recent year.
2. The highest age incidence showed between the ages of 10 to 12 years (38.1%), and majority of the patween the ages of 7 to 15 years (83.4%). 3. Male to female sex ratio was 1. 1 : 1.
4. The highest seasonal incidence was in winter and spring.
5. Major manifestations were carditis (61.9%), polyarthritis (38.8%), erythema mar
ginatum (5.0%), subcutaneous nodules (3.6%), and chorea (0. 0%). And minor symptoms were fever (64. 0%) and arthralgia (48. 2%).
6. In laboratory findings, ,leukocytosis was presented in 51.1% and anemia in 40.3%.
In most cases, ESR (81.4%) and ASO titer (79.7%) were elevated significantly.
7. In electrocardiographic findings, tachycardia was present in 55.2%, Prolongation of P-Rinterval and Q-Tc interval were seen in 41.9% and 34.3%.
